Summer residence of the Timurids
An ancient city Shakhrisabz, built almost three thousand years ago! This city is famous for the fact that Tamerlane was born here. The historical center of the city is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage and carefully guarded, in order to preserve its unchanged. The most significant construction of the city is Aksaray, which is the ruins of the one beautiful palace of Amir Timur.
In memory of the place of his birth, Tamerlane laid a huge palace, which is now in ruined condition. Many architectural constructions of the heritage of the great commander were destroyed by the Bukharian Khan Abdullah in the end of the 16th century. As the legend says, Abdullah Khan were going to Shakhrisabz and saw the walls of Ak Saray, and tried to reach them drove to death his horse, so this building was majestic and high. This fact so touched the pride of the Khan that he gave the order to destroy everything that was built during the reign of Temur in Shakhrisabz.
Restoration of the palace of Ak Sarah is being conducted with special intensity. There are huge forty-meter gates, with separate fragments of stunning mosaic, unique masonry. Construction works of the summer palace lasted more than two decades. The palace itself consisted of several courtyards paved with white slabs, the walls were decorated with gold and azure patterns. On the roof of the palace was built a huge pool, which still excites the minds of architects on their own scale. And the scale of the entire residence can be judged by the calculations of the residual structures of the building. For comparison, the central courtyard alone was 122 meters wide and 245-250 meters long, and the height of the main portal could reach 65-70 meters!
